NZOA Registrar Paper Day was held on 27 March at Invercargill Hospital where 30 varied and interesting presentations were given by registrars from around New Zealand. The pressure is on for a 6-minute presentation but this did not deter them from sharing their valuable research.
Congratulations to the winner of Paper Day this year - Cindy Ou from Waikato Hospital who presented her research on "the effects of a challenge state intervention on patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery - a randomised controlled trial". The specific aims and objectives of Cindy's research were that elective orthopaedic surgery is in high demand; increasing pressures and resource constraints within the public health system are limiting the number of elective surgeries performed. Although there are numerous programmes in place to streamline patients for surgery and increase hospital turnover, individual psychological factors are being recognised as having an important role in patient preparedness for and recovery from surgery.
Highly Commended papers were from Raphael Matsis with "Inter-rater reliability in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome between an orthopaedic hand surgeon and hand therapists using CTS-6" and Supilate Mikaele with "the effect of pelvic obliquity on accurately defining the CSVL in AIS: a retrospective review of radiographs" congratulations!
We look forward to more interesting research in 2026 on Thursday March 5th in Auckland.
