Orthopaedic Registrar (non-training) - Hutt Valley and Wellington
Capital & Coast and Hutt Valley DHBs provide secondary and tertiary surgical services.  They have an opportunity for a non-training registrar.  During your time in this role you will:

  • assess elective patients before surgery, and discuss their management with a consultant
  • perform or assist with acute surgery depending on level of experience
  • attend planned theatre sessions and conduct such surgical procedures as approved/supervised by the consultant
  • complete daily examination of inpatients for whom responsible, ensuring their appropriate management
  • supervise the house-surgeon in the management of patients.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Paediatric Orthopaedics, Starship Child Health, Auckland

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon - Wairarapa DHB
The DHB is looking to fill this role permanently with a vocationally registered surgeon to work up to 1.0 FTE.  However, they are open to discussion around a fixed term appointment.  The successful applicant will be one of four Orthopaedic Surgeons in a unit which provides a comprehensive public and in private orthopaedic service for the population of the Wairarapa.  In view of the opportunity for a private income this appointment is likely to be either permanent part time or fixed term part time.  An interest in arthroplasty would be an advantage.  You can view more details on the job here or visit the DHB website for a copy of the job description and to apply for this role.

Spinal Fellowship at Middlemore Hospital
This is a short notice opportunity for a Spinal Fellow at Middlemore Hospital available from beginning of February 2020 to end January 2021.  Suitable applicants must have proof of NZ Medical Council registration, or evidence from NZMC that you qualify for NZ registration for an orthopaedic fellowship.  They are unable to consider applications from overseas, non-comparable health systems due to the short timeframe.

Middlemore Hospital has the Regional Spinal Cord Injuries Unit for the upper north island of NZ, with a catchment population of 2.5 million.  Working with experienced orthopaedic spinal surgeons, the successful Fellow will be involved in the care of acute and elective spine patients, including patients admitted through the Regional Acute Spinal Cord Injury pathway.  Fellows will also gain experience in the management of the full range of spinal column injuries.  Exposure to outpatient clinics allows assessment of new spine patients, as well as those requiring follow up.  Elective referrals expose the Fellow to the management of degenerative diseases, infections, inflammatory arthritis, adult scoliosis, tumours and metastatic disease and complex deformity. The Fellow would be intimately involved in the assessment, co-ordination and treatment of patients with spinal cord injuries.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon - Waikato DHB
A full time permanent position is available for a surgeon with significant experience and Fellowship training in adult spinal surgery and care. You will be joining three existing orthopaedic spine surgeons at Waikato Hospital. The position includes a role in general orthopaedics as well as management of orthopaedic trauma and involvement in outreach clinics. There will be an on-call component to the position.

The Orthopaedic Unit operates with 54 adult beds across 2 wards, plus paediatric beds in a paediatric ward.  The team covers all subspecialties with the exception of paediatric spinal surgery.   Applicants must be suitable qualified Medical Practitioners with an Australasian Fellowship in Orthopaedics or recognised equivalent as well as either registered or eligible for vocational registration with the New Zealand Medical Council.

Registrars (2 positions) - Waikato Hospital
From 2019 two 0.5 FTE registrar positions are available at Waikato Hospital.  These are designed to allow continued clinical practice in the field of orthopaedic surgery whilst enabling the registrar to dedicate the remaining time during the week to academic activity.

Academic activity will be supervised by Mr Joe Baker who has a part-time academic appointment.  Successful candidates are encouraged to develop their own ideas.  However, a number of opportunities exist already in the department.  For suitably impactful research additional funding may be sought.

Orthopaedic Specialist - NZALS Orthopaedic Specialist Hamilton Clinic
The New Zealand Artificial Limb Service (NZALS) is seeking a specialist to be involved in their Hamilton Centre Clinics.  Clinic times may vary depending on demand, however NZALS would look to commit to 1 clinic per week for approx 1 hour.  The specialist will work collaboratively with their team to provide artificial limb clinics, assessments and referrals for amputees.  They could be either an employee of have a Specialist Service Agreement with NZALS.  Contact Sean Gray, NZALS CEO for more information.
